The School of Applied Sciences and Sport and Exercise Science Research Centre at the University is looking for an experienced and self-motivated applicant for a PhD position in the field of muscle biomechanics. As part of a fully-funded project, and together with an interdisciplinary team of engineers, clinicians and sport scientists, the applicant will examine adaptation of human lower limb muscles and tendons to mechanical loading. A full scholarship including tuition fees is available to EU students.

The main tasks related to the position

  • Establishing long-term exercise protocols to develop muscle and tendon biomechanical properties across the age range
  • Analysing human lower-limb muscles using dynamometry, EMG, ultrasonography and MRI


  • A Master of Science in biomechanics, kinesiology or a closely related field
  • Some experience in kinematic and kinetic data collection during human movement; and/or analysing neuromechanical properties of human muscle (for example, dynamometry, EMG, ultrasonography and/or MRI)
  • Some experience in programming, data processing and analysis (e.g. MATLAB)
  • Excellent oral and written communication in English
