GREAT BRITAIN – Exeter

Job Description and Requirements

Synopsys NE Ltd (https://www.synopsys.com/simpleware.html) invites applications for an Early Stage Researcher position (Doctoral Candidate) as part of the Rapid Biomechanics and Simulation for Personalized Clinical Design (RAINBOW) MCSA European Training Network. RAINBOW is funded under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program.

The post holder will be employed on a fixed term (36-month contract) and be principally based at the Synopsys-Simpleware offices in Exeter UK but will also be enrolled as a full time graduate student at the University of Luxembourg (https://wwwen.uni.lu/) undertaking research towards a PhD degree award. The candidate will be expected to spend periods of time in Luxembourg as well as with other partners in the consortium.

The post holder will develop numerical methods to simulate the deformations of soft-tissues in the context of computer-aided surgery. In particular, he/she will contribute to bridging the gap between advanced 3D imaging techniques and physics-based computer simulations in order to improve current capabilities in the area of computer-aided diagnostic and surgical planning. A thorough knowledge of software development is essential.

This is a full time (37.5 hours per week) position on a fixed term basis for a fixed-term of 36 months.

We offer a competitive salary for this position.

Applications for this position have been extended until the 15th of October 2018. Original closing date was the 10th of September 2018.

Job description

Thanks to recent advances in medical imaging and computer tomography, medical surgery is undergoing a revolution. Surgeons have routinely access to 3D reconstructions of patient anatomy that help them perform diagnoses, plan their operations, and may even have access to real-time feedback during surgical operations. Within the RAINBOW MSCA network. The job holder will explore the processing of 3D image data to convert to Computer Aided Engineering Geometric Representations.

The Early Stage Researcher will carry out one or more of the following tasks throughout the project:

  1. Develop techniques for the conversion of triangulated data into NURBS patches for the subsequent use of iso-geometric approaches. In particular focusing on generating conforming multipart models starting from image data.
  2. Statistical modelling- PCA.

Other tasks you will carry out:

  • To write and maintain accurate records of the research being undertaken.
  • To prepare publications and research presentations with guidance and advice.
  • To communicate and present research results within the research group, at meetings, through research paper publications and other recognized avenues as appropriate.
  • To assist with the preparation of progress reports on research for funding bodies as required.
  • To contribute to the overall activities of the research team and ITN as required, including attending network training activities and participating in public outreach activities.
  • To provide technical advice in relation of the research and the techniques used to other staff members within the wider research team.
  • To take part in knowledge-transfer activities, including collaborative meetings with other research groups.
  • To ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements in respect of equality and diversity, data protection, copyright and licensing, security, financial and other University policies, procedures and codes as appropriate.
  • To take reasonable care for the health of yourself and of other persons who may be affected by your acts or omissions at work in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, EC directives and the University’s Safety, Health and Environment Policies and procedures and to cooperate with the University on any legal duties placed on it as the employer.
  • You may be asked to perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role.

Eligibility

  • ITN rules for recruitment state that only early stage researchers (ESR) in the first 4 years of their career can be appointed. Therefore the applicant must not have been awarded a PhD and their research experience must total ≤ 4 years at date of recruitment (counted from the diploma/degree that gives the right to embark in a doctoral degree).
  • ESR recruitment is also subject to the mobility rule: the researcher must not have lived or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies etc) in the UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to his/her recruitment. Short stays (e.g. holidays) are not taken into account. Researchers can be of any nationality.
  • The ESR will ideally commence PhD enrolment / employment in September 2018.
